$1 Million In Heroin Seized At Newark Airport
NEWARK (AP) ―
Authorities seized $1 million worth of heroin from an arriving traveler at Newark Liberty International Airport.
Customs and Border Protection officers say Jamie Lopez was trying to smuggle the heroin on Saturday in liquid form in four liquor bottles.
The 49-year-old Colombian national allegedly was carrying the drug in three one-liter bottles of Irish Cream and a one-liter bottle of whiskey.
Customs inspectors became suspicious when they noticed the liquid inside the bottles was thick and glue-like. It later tested positive for heroin.
Lopez was charged in U.S. District court in Newark on Monday.
Customs officials say that unlike cocaine, heroin is rarely smuggled in liquid form.
