Hewlett Couple Shaken By Violent Home Invasion

HEWLETT, N.Y. (CBS) ― The hunt is on Wednesday night for two brazen burglars who burst into a family home masquerading as Con Edison workers on Long Island, terrorizing their victims.

The Hewlett couple who survived the invasion could barely contain their emotions when talking to CBS 2. Just after sending their three children off to school across the street, robbers posting as utility workers burst into the couple's home with plastic ties and duct tape.

Police said the home invaders struck just after the wife left for work, leaving a housekeeper to answer the doorbell. The suspects wore uniforms and toolbelts, parked a blue work van out front, and claimed to be from Con Ed.

"Obviously we don't have Con Ed here in Nassau County but the live-in housekeeper saw them in some sort of uniforms, she looked through the opaque window, saw the uniforms thinking they were legit, slightly opened the door and that's when they forced their way into the home," said Nassau Co. Police Det. Sgt. Anthony Repalone.

The intruders gagged and tied the housekeeper and homeowner, before grabbing as much as $100,000 in cash and a considerable amount of jewels.

Witnesses saw the blue van speed off, while the victims frantically called 911. Police said the suspect left behind fingerprints and other evidence.

The Franklin School nearby notified parents immediately of the crime, but assured parents all the children were safe. Police canvassed door-to-door for hours.

The victims' extended family came quickly to offer comfort, but nerves were shattered.

Police have since been reminding homeowners in the area to look for photo identification, and ask for proof, if it means even calling the workers' company, before answering the door.

Investigators describe the intruders as dark-skinned males, one in his 20s, the other about 40, wearing utility belts, blue work uniforms, and driving a blue work van. They ask anyone in the Hewlett area who may have seen the van between 10 and 11 a.m. to call Nassau Police.
