RNC For Hoffman After Scozzafava Suspends Campaign
ALBANY (CBS) ―
Republican Dierdre Scozzafava is suspending her campaign in New York's 23rd Congressional race and is encouraging her supporters to embrace Conservative Party nominee Doug Hoffman.
Campaign spokesman Matt Burns says she thinks its for the best of the party.
The announcement comes after a Siena College poll found she was in third place with 20 percent of the vote, while Hoffman and Democratic nominee Bill Owens were too close to call with 35 and 36 percent respectively.
The race has pitted conservative and moderate wings of the Republican Party against each other.
The election is Tuesday.
Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele said the committee is endorsing Hoffman.
Calling Scozzafava's move a "selfless act," Steele says the RNC's change of course is effective immediately and will include financial backing and get out the vote efforts for Doug Hoffman.
Scozzafava's announcement came after a Siena College poll found she was in third place with 20 percent of the vote in the heavily Republican district, while Hoffman and Democratic nominee Bill Owens were too close to call with 35 and 36 percent respectively.
Tuesday's race has pitted conservative and moderate wings of the Republican Party against each other.
On his campaign web site, Hoffman said, "I want to tell Washington: No more bailouts. No more taxes. No more trillion dollar deficits. That's what I'm fighting for."
