Winter Storm Coats Parts Of Tri-State In Ice

At Least A Half-Inch Of Ice Measured In Some Parts Of Western & Inland NY

NEW YORK (CBS) ― It wasn't rain, but lots of ice that was creating problems to the north and west of New York City on Wednesday.

In Rockland County, CBS 2's Magee Hickey found the icy conditions had turned the Cherry Lane School parking lot in Suffern into a virtual skating rink. And from walking to driving, in Westchester County, freezing rain forced drivers to take it slow on the roads in Cortlandt Manor.

In Orange County, CBS 2's Tony Aiello found conditions on the road were just as treacherous.

The ice built up and a tree came down in Pine Island, crushing an '87 Dodge truck that had just been fixed up with a new engine by Eddie Price's stepbrother.

"Thank God nobody got hurt, but the ice from on top of the tree was so heavy, it pulled the tree over and split that truck in two," he told CBS 2. "That's my little stepbrother's truck, he just got his license!"

Much of Orange County was glazed over as freezing rain put a crystallized coating on trees and power lines. Remarkably, few wires came down. Orange and Rockland counties reported just a handful of outages.

The morning commute was messy though, with several dozen accidents reported. By noon, crews had most pavements clear of ice and traffic was moving well. Any pavement that went unplowed, unsalted or un-sanded was a different story. About an inch of ice coated some parts of the area.

Vinny Scancarello, a delivery driver for Boar's Head, said the roads didn't worry him, but the parking lots sure did.

"Just the ice, the slush, [it's a] little slick. You gotta watch your footing," he said.

There are still worried that what is just what will freeze overnight as temperatures drop. Be sure to stay logged on to WCBSTV.com for up-to-the-minute weather forecasts and a list of any closings or delays.
