The owner of a nuclear power plant in the New York suburbs says one of its reactors has shut down automatically, probably because of a nearby lightning strike.
Entergy Nuclear Northeast says there was no release of radioactivity, no damage to the plant equipment and no danger to workers.
The company says Indian Point 3 shut down as it is designed to at about 8:30 p.m. Monday because of a disturbance in an electrical switchyard across the street. It says a lightning is believed to be the cause.
It says the reactor should be back online this week. The other reactor at the site in Buchanan, Indian Point 2, was not affected.
The reactors were shut down twice in two weeks back in May because of a problem with a valve in a steam generator.
The Indian Point power plant is located on 239 acres in Buchanan.
