If first impressions are everything, then one New Jersey convenience store trainee may be searching for a new job.
That's because on his first day of work, the Jersey City clerk-in-training was terrorized by a group of brazen robbers, and now police are hoping video of the crime will help bring the assailants to justice.
On surveillance video exclusively obtained by CBS 2, one of the suspects, a man in a dark hooded coat, is seen grabbing the clerk by the neck and placing him into a headlock. He then slaps him and pours hot coffee on his face, before smashing the coffee pot across his head.
The beating and punching continues until the clerk is forced down to his knees, holding the left side of his face and back of his neck as he writhes in pain.
Another clerk on duty was also roughed up by the thugs, but not as badly as the trainee. In the video, a female suspect appears very excited by the action, before she heads to the cash register where she takes over $300.
As if that wasn't enough, the female suspect also took 20 packs of cigarettes with her too.
Nasaat Salib, the owner of the store located on Summit Ave., says the young man, who came to America from Egypt three months ago, is okay now, though emotionally shaken. He says aside from the minor burns, bumps, and bruises, the employee also suffered a black eye that's still closed up.
"He's too scared to work any place in Jersey City, Manhattan, any place," Salib says.
Salib says the robbery is enough to make him want to close up shop and move somewhere else. But he also says he's very proud of his brave employees, who despite being beaten up, continued to help a man buying a pack of cigarettes after the robbery.
The suspects are still at large and anyone with information about the robbery is urged to call Jersey City police.
