With the unemployment rate soaring, people are pouncing on any job opportunity they find. That's why a yet-to-open mall in Tinton Falls was bustling on Friday not with shoppers, but with job seekers.
Regina Strode and Anthony Williams are pounding the pavement in and out of stores at the premium outlets center that's not open for business yet. They're hoping one of 800 new retail jobs can be theirs.
Williams, a Belmar resident, works on and off in security, but hasn't been able to find steady work in months.
"Sometimes it gets too much for me and I just stay in the house. It's a big let down," he says.
Bernadette Davis is handing out business cards, hoping to win customers for her family locksmith business. The company where she works from 9 to 5 is closing down, and the family startup hasn't turned a profit yet.
"Its been a hard road, but we're making it," she says.
These are just a few of dozens of people calling, emailing and coming by the premium outlets, hoping to capitalize on what seems like a gold mine of opportunity in such trying economic times.
The new mall, which opens Nov. 13, also created 300 construction jobs.
"We've had a huge response of people in the area looking for jobs," says Michell Deroian, General Manager of the Jersey Shore Premium Outlets.
If you are looking for work, stores are still hiring, especially with the holiday season coming up. Just come to the mall management office and they'll give you a list of the stores hiring and the positions they're looking to fill.
