Fmr. NYPD Officer Galtieri Gets 32 Years To Life

Retired Sgt. Being Sentenced For 2007 Murder Of Ex-Wife Jeanne Kane

NEW YORK (CBS) ― Retired NYPD Sgt. John Galtieri was sentenced Wednesday to 32 years to life for the brutal murder of Jean Kane, 58, a member of the popular 1960s trio The Kane Triplets.

Kane was gunned down by her ex-husband Paul Galtieri in a Staten Island parking two years ago. Galtieri was reportedly dissatisfied with the couple's divorce settlement.

Kane's sister, Lucille Kane Giordano, said a long prison sentence for Galtieri would be the only way to obtain justice.

"As long as he spends the rest of his life in prison, it might bring us some peace," Giordano said. "We love and miss her terribly."

Judge Steven Rooney called Galtieri a cold-blooded killer while the former police sergeant appeared before him in court, and then sentenced him to 32 years to life in prison.

Galtieri's daughter also lashed out at him in her victim impact statement.

"He was a coward for what he did, for what he put her through," said Patricia DeFranco. "I am just happy that it's over and she finally got the justice she deserves."

Divorce papers showed Kane endured years of physical abuse during the 23-year marriage. Prosecutors said the divorce settlement infuriated Galtieri because it awarded his ex-wife more than two-thousand a month in alimony, half the sale of their New Jersey home and $400,000 in damages for the abuse she suffered.

"Maybe this will give a signal and a warning to other men who abuse their wives and then kill them, " Maureen Kane Poehlemann, the victim's sister, said. "Maybe this will make them think twice before they ever raise their hands to anyone again."

The Staten Island District Attorney said Galtieri refused to meet with probation officers for a pre-sentencing report.

He will be eligible for parole in the year 2041 at the earliest, when he would be 95 years old.
