More and more people are staying closer home this July 4 weekend, due to high gas prices.
With a barrel of oil at a record high and the national average price
for a gallon of gas at $4.09, for the first time in a decade, travel
numbers are going down for the July 4 holiday.
The AAA estimates only one million New Jersey residents will travel 50 miles from home, which is down 1.6 percent from last year.
"Clearly we've reached a breaking point at some point, the majority of the nation is paying over four dollars a gallon. And it's definitely having an impact on your everyday life," AAA spokesman Marie Montgomery said.
New Jersey clearly always has the lowest gas prices. The average statewide is $3.99 a gallon. Connecticut's average is $4.37 and New Yorker pay the highest, an average of $4.39 a gallon.
Companies like Greyhound and NJ Transit have added buses and Metro North has additional trains to ferry vacationers out to their destinations.
