Kidnapping Victim Rescued From Car Trunk
Two Men Arrested, But Files Have Yet To Be Charged
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
A real-life kidnapping ordeal for a 53-year-old man is over after spending more than 24 hours stuffed in a trunk in Brooklyn.
In a hospital tonight a man is lucky to be alive after surviving a frightening kidnapping.
"It was weird [when] you see the guy," Bed-Stuy resident Hamza Abdul says. "Why would somebody put him inside a trunk?"
The motive for the kidnapping remains a mystery that had scores of detectives working through the night. They surrounded the Nissan Maxima on Decatur Street after rescuing a man named Jim who was tied up in trunk.
Neighborhood residents watched the rescue, stunned, and say they do not recognize the man.
"I saw them take the guy out on a stretcher, out of the trunk," resident Charles James said. "I didn't know what was going on I thought he was dead."
The victim, very much alive, was loaded into the ambulance as police chased down two men.
One was arrested right by the car, the other nearby in the halls of an apartment building.
"A lot of people in here, their kids just be roaming free and, you know, they could been caught up in it," a tenant in the building said.
Police Sources tell CBS 2 that, while the motive is not clear, they know where it all began at R & R Deli at Pacific Avenue and Albany Street. On Saturday, the victim was grabbed and put into a car.
His friends called police, and sources tell CBS 2 that Jim was at the deli almost every day and appeared to have no enemies.
Police continue to question the two men at the 79th Precinct Stationhouse. No charges have been filed yet, and there could be more arrests.
Detectives went to see the victim at the hospital but left almost as soon as they arrived. They'll need time to interview him as they work to unravel this kidnapping mystery.
