It was an emotional day in court on Wednesday as the suspect in a deadly case of road rage on faced a judge on Long Island.
The college student charged in the Long Beach road rage killing spoke exclusively to CBS 2 HD. 22-year-old Evan Potts told police he panicked before running down an enraged driver of a Porsche blocking his escape.
Both sides of the controversial case met face to face in court.
"All I have to say is that I'm glad that I'm able to be out to defend myself against these charges, and that's all I can say right now," said Potts.
His parents, Amy and Raymond, were finally able to secure their son's release from jail, with $500,000 bond.
CBS 2's Jennifer McLogan asked his parents if the rumors were true that they had to mortgage their home to put up the bond.
"Right now I can't speak, I'm sorry," said Raymond Potts.
The victim, 34-year-old Ian Sharinn, was an engireening graduate of Stony Brook and avid outdoorsman. His family walked stoically from the courtroom, but once inside were seated in the same row as the suspect and his family, staring sadly and shaking their heads.
Sharinn was engaged to be married and the grief was palpable. A judge will soon hear more details of the crime; that Potts called 911 in the midst of exchanging angry words with the victim and ran him down when shifting his Nissan Altima into drive.
An unidentified witness said it appeared to be an accident.
"Someone else in our building gave the same account of the story."
Was it unintentional or the criminal act of manslaughter? Potts will be back in Nassau Criminal Courts on June 15.
