Staffer Gives $75K Fountain To NY University
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (CBS) ―
A longtime staffer has given $75,000 to create a new fountain at the Long Island college where she got her degree, lives and has worked for more than 60 years.
The new granite fountain at Long Island University's C.W. Post Campus marks the latest in a series of gifts from Mary Lai, now the university's treasurer emerita. The 88-year-old still goes to work every day from her home on the Brookville campus, where she has lived since 1964.
She began working for LIU as chief financial officer in 1946, four years after graduating from its Brooklyn campus. She met her late husband, William "Buck" Lai, while studying there.
Lai says she lives simply, and it gives her "the greatest pleasure" to give back to the university.
