Theories Abound About Murder Of Greenwich Man

"Suicide By Hitman" Just One Of The Ideas Being Discussed

GREENWICH (CBS) ― Police wound down their search of real estate developer Andrew Kissel's rented mansion on Wednesday without revealing what, if anything, they discovered.

One source said the home on Dairy Road was virtually empty of furniture and belongings.

Movers hired by Kissel's estranged wife, Hayley, found him dead from stab wounds in the basement Monday. CBS 2 has confirmed Kissel's hands were bound with plastic straps and his tee shirt was pulled up over his head.

The New York Post reported Wednesday one theory is "suicide by hitman," allegedly arranged by Kissel so his daughters could collect on a $10 million life insurance policy.

Howard Graber, a lawyer Kissel hired on March 1 to work on his divorce, said that theory is one of many he has heard.

"He presented himself as someone who still cared about his wife and kids' best interest," Graber told CBS 2. "So I can't totally write-off the life insurance theory. I just wouldn't imagine he would arrange for it to be that brutal a slaying of himself."

It's no stretch to say Kissel's life was a mess. Thursday he was due in federal court to plead guilty to a multimillion-dollar mortgage and title fraud. Kissel faced up to 20 years in prison, and potentially owed millions of dollars to alleged victims.

CBS 2 has learned one theory police are considering is that Kissel was killed to keep him from cooperating with investigators looking into one of his many alleged crimes.
