K-9 Candidate Bones Up On Issues

NEW YORK (CBS) ― As the days dwindle down to a precious few before Election Day, getting press can be tough for lesser-known candidates.

One campaign manager knows that and has taken to the streets handing out leaflets for her man, Eli. That would be Eli the Chihuahua, who's leaflets urge voters to think outside the box.

That would be the outside of the Milk Bones Dog Biscuit box.

Eli is one of five small dog finalists to be on the cover the venerable bone box. And before you scream at CBS 2 for doing a dog food commercial, you need to know Eli's owner, Karen Biehl, called us on her own to pitch the story of her campaign.

The effort features Karen with a sandwich board getup made of biscuit boxes, urging people to vote for her pintsized pal, Eli. The day CBS 2 caught up with Eli, he was wearing a tuxedo. But Karen told us Eli, playing to different constituencies, has many different looks.

We gathered the lobster outfit she put Eli in and next was aimed at the Long Island maritime crowd. The Guys and Dolls-like zoot suit with black fedora was probably aimed at the Broadway acting community, if not the Michael Jackson crowd.

We didn't do a scientific poll, but the people on the street thought Eli was cute and many promised to email their vote for the little critter to the Milk Bone site. Eli maintained his composure during today's campaigning, except for the moment when one white fluffy little dog got in his face and the two mixed it up a bit.

We're pretty sure Eli lost the vote of Fluffy's owner, but may have impressed onlookers with his dogged refusal to cut and run. We didn't include the dustup in our television story because we felt it would scare the heck out of young viewers.
