More Long Island Students Diagnosed With MRSA

NEW YORK (AP) ― Four more students on Long Island have been diagnosed with an antibiotic-resistant bacterial infection.

The latest cases brings the number on Long Island to a total of six.

School officials say students in the Southampton, Longwood and Freeport districts have methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA.

Two other students were diagnosed with MRSA in the Baldwin and Sachem districts, reported this month.

It was not immediately clear what condition the other students were in, though the Freeport High School student had apparently recovered.

Such infections became a concern following the death this month of a Virginia high school senior who was diagnosed with it.
