Ailing Interpreter Puts L.I. Slavery Trial On Hold

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) ― Testimony has been delayed at the trial of two Long Island millionaires accused of keeping two Indonesian women as virtual slaves.

The reason: An interpreter called in sick.

The interpreter is helping tell the story of a 51-year-old woman, identified only as Samirah, who claims she and another housekeeper were subjected to physical and mental abuse for several years inside the Muttontown home of Mahender and Varsha Sabhnani.

The Sabhnanis are accused of bringing the Indonesian women to the United States to work as housekeepers but enslaving them instead in their Long Island mansion, sending $100 a month home to their families.

It was not immediately clear when testimony in federal court in Central Islip would resume.
