Guilty Plea In NY Lottery Scam
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
A New York City man has admitted he created phony winning scratch off tickets.
Alvin Summers pleaded guilty to grand larceny and is facing up to seven years in prison. The guilty plea also resolves cases in Manhattan, Nassau and Monroe counties.
Queens District Attorney Richard Brown says Summers cut and pasted winning numbers on losing New York State lottery tickets. He sold them to strangers saying that he couldn't claim the prize money for various reasons and collected about half the cost of a winning ticket.
The victims would go to claim the prize only to discover the tickets were invalid and rejected for being altered.
It the Queens case, prosecutors say he made about $15,000.
Brown was elected Queens DA in November 1991, and was re-elected in 1995,
1999, 2003 and 2007.
