LI Man Being Held In Death Of Girlfriend's Baby
MIDDLE ISLAND, N.Y. (AP) ―
Police on Long Island say a baby with head injuries has now died. Her mother's boyfriend is in custody.
Madeline Mendolia was pronounced dead late Wednesday at Stony Brook University Medical Center. She was 11 weeks old.
Howard Brooks of Port Jefferson Station is being held on $2 million bail. He has pleaded not guilty to reckless assault of a child and child endangerment.
Defense lawyer Jason Bassett says Brooks is extremely upset about the baby's injuries and did not cause them "in any way intentionally."
Authorities say Madeline's mother, Sareena Mendolia, called police to her Middle Island home on Sunday.
