A Brooklyn mailman has confessed to stealing greeting cards full of cash, that were mailed on his route.
The mailman turned 'Grinch' is the talk of the town. "It's terrible," one Bath Beach resident told CBS 2 HD.
For those who knew Michael Olivio well, it's even more shocking.
"I know bad people and I know good people," said Jim Cardito. "He's not a bad person."
According to the Daily News, Olivio was up to no good, stealing greeting cards, some, which were filled with cash. One of Olivo's possible victims, Lucy Derosa said, "My two grandchildren didn't get their birthday gifts that I mailed them checks. I called (the post office) and said what's going on? People are not getting my mail."
Officials at the Bat Beach Post Office declined to give us any information, saying only that Olivio once worked there.
Growing customer complaints led to an internal investigation, which resulted in a federal probe. Authorities sent out 'test' greeting cards that had electronic transmitters inside, hoping to catch Olivio red-handed.
Earlier this week, one of the bugged cards failed to make it to its recipient, and was tracked to Olivio at the Bath Beach Post Office.
Olivio was confronted by federal agents, and tried to escape, but was caught nearby. Inside his car, authorities found bags full of undelivered greeting cards. Some were sealed, others opened.
"It's a disgrace," added Derosa, who feels betrayed and sad. She said Olivio ruined the holidays for others, and now he's getting what he deserves.
Our phone calls to the post office were not returned, but Olivio reportedly confessed to authorities that he'd been stealing from his mail route since February.
