Markoff's Fiancée In Disbelief Over Murder Charge

'He Could Not Hurt A Fly' Woman Says Of Med Student Accused Of Killing Masseuse

 CBS News Interactive: Crime Beat

LITTLE SILVER, N.J. (CBS) ― Philip Markoff looks like a clean-cut, all-American boy. He was going to get married this summer on the Jersey Shore, where his fiancée is originally from. On Tuesday, she defended him, saying police have arrested the wrong man.

Pictures of Markoff and Megan McAllister, the woman he planned to wed, surfaced hours after his arrest. By all accounts they appear like the perfect, happy couple. They had a fairytale wedding planned for the summer at McLoone's Pier House, a reception hall on the beach in Long Branch.

But now Markoff, the 22-year-old medical student, is suspected of being the "Craigslist Killer."

Family members of Markoff's fiancée had no comment Tuesday as they gathered in Little Silver, where a basket of fruit was delivered to the bride-to-be, a Red Bank Regional High School graduate and medical student herself.

Neighbors say they are shocked and feel horrible for the young woman.

"Personally, I wouldn't stay with him. I'd say give it all up, find somebody else. I wouldn't stay with someone who could be a killer," said Emily Dodenhoff, McAllister's neighbor.

The owner of the ritzy reception hall says the couple was planning an August wedding. "However," owner Tim McLoone adds, "in deference to our client, the prospective bride and her family, who must also be in great distress at this time, McLoones will have no further comment."

In an e-mail, McAllister reportedly told a news agency the Markoff she knows "could not hurt a fly" and called him a "beautiful person."

But Boston police say Markoff, the son of an upstate New York dentist, is suspected in attacking two other women, both escorts who were tied up and robbed.

"Those things turn out to be right usually," said Henry Zucker, a Little Silver resident.

In Monmouth County, news crews have gathered at McAllister's family's house, though she or her family have yet to address the media publicly.
