Two Arrested For Unlicensed Dentistry Practice

JERSEY CITY (CBS) ― Two people were busted for allegedly practicing dentistry without a license in Jersey City.

Marly Vasquez and Frank Macias were arrested after an undercover officer went in for a teeth cleaning. Officers began conducting surveillance of the business after a patient told officials the business under Macias' name wouldn't give him pain killers for work done at her Central Avenue office.

Vasquez was performing all kinds of procedures including root canals and had drugs like lidacaine, along with syringes, needles and drilling tools.

"She had full dental equipment except for a chair, no sink, no sanitary facilities in the room where she was doing the procedures," Deputy Police Chief Peter Nalvach said.

The two appeared in court where Vasquez told the judge that she doesn't speak English. Through a translator, Vasquez said the two were "going to acquire an attorney" and maintained their innocence.

Vasquez also told the judge that she was married to a citizen before surrendering her Colombian passport.

As she left the court, CBS 2's Christine Sloan asked her in Spanish if she was a dentist in Colombia, but Vazquez had no comment. Macias then spit on a CBS 2 cameraman.

Witnesses were disgusted at the display.

"The guy's trying to take a shot of him and he spits on him, spits directly at the camera," Daniel White said.

Another woman said it was completely "distasteful."

Those who frequented the office said they had no idea about the illegal practice.

"I'm shocked because I've known that man for years. I couldn't believe it," Robert Grajales said.

Practicing dentistry without a license carries a sentence of up to five years behind bars.

The case is being sent to the prosecutor's office while the judge is determining whether to inform immigration officials about Vasquez' status in this country.
