McGreeveys Return To Divorce Court To Talk Money

ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) ― Testimony is again delayed in former Gov. James McGreevey's divorce trial, as the nation's first openly gay governor and his estranged wife engage in more talks.

McGreevey, Dina Matos McGreevey and their lawyers are meeting behind closed doors at the Union County Courthouse as the fourth day of their divorce proceeding gets under way.

Court spokeswoman Sandra Thaler-Gerber said the McGreeveys are trying to hammer out financial arrangements, including child support and alimony payments, as they seek to dissolve their four-year marriage, McGreevey currently pays $2,500 a month in unallocated support, meaning amounts for child support and alimony aren't specified separately.

New Jersey grants child support based on the income and earning ability of both parents and how much time the child spends with each.

The couple reached a deal on the custody portion of their divorce last week, but details remain sealed.

The couple has one child, 6-year-old Jacqueline.

Matos McGreevey also claims she was duped into marrying a closeted gay man who needed the cover of a wife to advance his political career.

The couple split in 2004, when McGreevey resigned during his first term after he acknowledged being "a gay American" and said he had an affair with a male staffer. The staffer denies the affair.
