Mob-Style Meat Cleaver Attack Shocks New Rochelle

In A Page Out Of Your Favorite Mafia Show Social Club Owner Behanded After Allegedly Owing Money To Wrong People

NEW ROCHELLE (CBS) ― It sounds like something straight out of "The Sopranos."

Attackers try to chop off a man's right hand because he allegedly owed them money.

Crime tape still marks the scene outside this Union Avenue Italian-American Social Club, where members drink coffee, play cards, and talk -- but not to reporters.

When told of the situation, one club member looked at CBS 2 HD and said smugly, "I don't know. I don't know."

New Rochelle police said the club manager – 42-year-old Vincent Zarcone -- was brutally attacked Sunday night by two men armed with a meat cleaver.

"He owed a substantial amount of money, and apparently Mr. Calise was unhappy with the payment schedule that had been worked out," said Lt. Christopher Hearle of the New Rochelle Police Department.

That's Christopher Calise, who allegedly attacked Zarcone while accomplice Maurice Mann held him in a bear hug.

"Basically severed his right hand with a meat cleaver," Lt. Hearle said.

A New Rochelle patrolman stopped the suspects after spotting them fleeing the scene in a rented Cadillac.

Police believe Zarcone was given a warning in the last couple of weeks. They said these same two suspects stabbed Zarcone without causing much injury, just as a way of showing they meant business.

Outside Zarcone's home, the cleaning lady said he's a nice guy.

"He works downstairs, the computer..." the woman said.

But he's been in trouble before -- a 2005 conviction for promoting gambling.

And now this mob-style assault reportedly has captured the interest of the feds' Organized Crime task force.

The victim is hospitalized and went through surgery Monday to reattach his hand.
