It was a fatal accident that still hasn't been cleared up.
A dumptruck got stuck on a Meadowlands Parkway divider, and fifteen cars piled up behind.
Five people were rushed to area hospitals, and 23 were treated at the scene. One person has died.
Route 3 eastbound is closed near the Parkway at Route 17. Drivers are advised to get off at Route 17 North and get onto Route 120 to make their way east.
This weekend's snowfall, and overnight ice, are also taking their toll on morning commuters.
The white fluffy flakes turned gray and slushy, turning roadways slick like ice-skating rinks.
"[It's] Crazy. Crazy. There's accidents all over the place," said tow truck operator Keith Roman. "People breaking down getting stuck sliding."
Ugly crash scenes are being repeated throughout the region. Tow truck drivers tell CBS 2 HD they are working harder than usual, and are getting thre times the normal number of calls.
Drivers and pedestrians are having to adjust to the slippery new reality: snow means slow. There are lots of fender-benders, and a lot of salt spreaders out trying to make the roads safe.
Driver John Miller however, doesn't mind the change. "It really sets the tone for the season," he said.
Picture perfect scenes of snow on trees can be seen if you look away from the fender benders and all night salt spreading.
Matthew Roscoe, 6 built his first snowman of the season Sunday.
"There's a lot everywhere," said Roscoe. "You can pick it up and you can throw it on the bench and make a big snowman!"
As the morning commute starts, you should drive slow, and take some extra time to get to work.
