After four cases were reported of students diagnosed with an antibiotic-resistant bacterial infection Thursday on Long Island, a fifth and separate case was announced from Roosevelt Union Free School District.
School officials in the Roosevelt School District have confirmed one case of methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus in the high school. The student identified with the bacterial infection is currently being treated at home. Letters are being sent to parents informing them of the discovery. Staff and teachers have also been alerted. Teachers have also been advised to discuss with students the significance of frequently washing their hands. Officials have also ensured the custodial staff has been directed to disinfect multiple areas of the middle school and high school on a consistent basis throughout the day. This latest case brings the number on Long Island to a total of seven. School officials say students in the Southampton, Longwood and Freeport districts have methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA.
Reported earlier this month were the cases of two other students diagnosed with MRSA in the Baldwin and Sachem Districts.
