MTA To Announce Winners Of 'Music Under New York'

23 Contestants Chosen Based On Musical Diversity; Permission To Perform Legally In NYC Subway Stations

NEW YORK (CBS) ― If you've ever been in any of New York City's subway stations, you've probably heard them: they're the sweet sounds of the underground. Not all of them are great, but it's the spirit of the underground world that has become an integral part of the city's transit system.

The MTA will announce the winners of the 'Music Under New York' auditions held two weeks ago. On May 1, 55 musicians and musical groups auditioned for the chance to perform under the MTA's new program. Through those auditions, a panel of judges selected 23 ensembles, whose names will be announced on Thursday. In addition, three of the selected ensembles will perfomr and be available for interviews.

The winning acts are supposed to represent a variety of styles, cultural backrounds and instruments.

Not all performers in the city's subway stations are endorsed by the MTA. The 23 winners will be allowed to perform throughout the city underground legally.
