Nassau County Unveils DWI 'Wall Of Shame'
Officials, Police Release Names, Faces Of All The People Charged With DWI Over Memorial Day Weekend
MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBS) ―
It's an attempt to embarrass drunk drivers. Officials in Nassau County are releasing the names and photos of the 109 people charged with driving while intoxicated over the Memorial Day weekend holiday.
Among the most serious cases:
* Juan Cardoza of Baldwin, who police say was driving westbound in the eastbound lanes on Sunrise Highway.
* Karen Armata of East Meadow, who police say was driving drunk with her children in the car.
* And Dr. Shirley Andersen, who has an internal medicine practice in Oyster Bay and lives in Laurel Hollow. Her husband told CBS 2 HD she had no comment.
County Executive Thomas Suozzi says the so-called "Wall of Shame" is meant to make drivers think before they drink.
"If you want to go out and drink go right ahead. We have nothing against that," Suozzi said. "But if you decide to drink and drive, we're going to arrest you and make your name public and we're gonna let people know who you are."
Officials released the names in the wake of the alleged drunk driving accident two weeks ago that left Nassau County Police Officer Kenneth Baribault critically injured.
