It was a terrifying 24-hours for homeowners in New Jersey. In two days there have been two home invasions in Newark, where armed men have kicked in a front door and robbed the owners at gunpoint.
A Newark family is counting its blessings trying to cope with the shock of strangers kicking in the front door and robbing a family relative visiting from the Dominican Republic. This was the second home invasion in as many days in Newark.
The first home invasion was at a house at 19 Blum Street. Last night around 9pm, say Newark police, two armed men kicked in the front door. Dressed in black they told the homeowner they were police officers and even had badges hanging around their necks. The robbers handcuffed the homeowner and his wife putting them in a closet. The robbers stole jewelry and cash. The victims' 10-year-old son was left unhurt. Neighbors of the central ward neighborhood were scared.
"You take for granted you got a badge that's what you think," said neighbor Clarence Williams.
Then Wednesday, in broad daylight, around 12:30, police sources say two armed men kicked in the front door of a house on North 7th street, and pistol-whipped a man inside the home, proceeding to take his laptop.
"He got hurt. He got hit in the head," said Carlos Reyes, a family friend of the victim.
"They locked the front door and escaped out the back," Reyes told CBS 2.
The robbers tied up the victim before fleeing, police said.
In addition to jewelry and cash, Newark residents say the robbers are taking electronic items as well.
