L.I. Police Search For Elusive 'Ninja Burglar'

HEWETT HARBOR, L.I. (CBS) ― A thief nicknamed the "Ninja Burglar" is breaking into people's homes on Long Island and helping himself to their prized possessions.

He is so efficient at robbing homes that police haven't been able to nab him, even though he's struck 18 times.

Stealth, sneeky and slick enough to get caught, a burglar has been stealing cash and jewels from luxury homes in Hewett Harbor, Neck and Bay Park. One resident has even nicknamed him the "Ninja Burglar" because of the way he gains access to the mansions.

"This person likes to come in through the 2nd floor on the roof. Sometimes he's coming in through open windows, sometimes through attics," said Detective Larry Feffer.

For over a year, a thief has been breaking into homes, usually during the day when no one is home.

"We're looking for fingerprints, we're looking for DNA. We have a few open leads but we haven't been able to identify or connect those leads to any particular person," said Feffer.

A total of 18 homes have been successfully hit and there have been 4 more failed attempts, one of which was Mildred Brocks' home.

"They couldn't get in and they left us their wonderful little ladder, with booties on the bottom so we wouldn't hear them coming in," said Brocks.

Most likely scared by the alarm going off and the multiple cameras around the house monitoring every angle.

"Many people skimp a little bit and don't alarm their sky-lights, but everything here is alarmed," said Brocks.

The thief, or thieves, are taking advantage of home owners' forgetfulness, slipping inside open windows and bypassing alarms that have been mistakenly left turned off. Consequently, the suspect has been fairly lucky finding the voids, getting in and stealing their property.

Nassau County police are increasing patrols and using video surveillance. They are asking anyone who sees anything suspicious to give them a call. So far, the thief has made off with an estimated $1 million in cash and jewels.
