Jurors in the Nixzmary Brown murder trial sat through graphic testimony Thursday by the medical examiner, whodisplayed autopsy photos of the bruised and battered 7-year-old girl who was left for dead inside her Brooklyn apartment.
Brown's stepfather, 29-year-old Cesar Rodriguez, is charged with the girl's murder, accused of beating her to death.
Dr. Barbara Sampson of the medical examiner's office told the court that Brown's weight at the time of her death was just 36 pounds, the average weight of a 4-year-old child. Aside from being malnourished, she had two black eyes, multiple blunt impact injuries to her entire body -- injuries had been sustained from several weeks to several hours before her death.
Sampson added it's possible Brown was dead for up to 8 hours before EMTs were called.
Not long into the testimony, the judge called for a break to give the tearful jurors, who were passing around tissues time to compose themselves after looking at the photos of the child.
In another development, the defense is still fighting for the mother, Nixzaliz Santiago, to be a witness in the trial of her husband. She is also charged in the girl's death and will go on trial in a few months.
