A New Jersey congressman has met with Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili as he seeks to bring home two young girls stuck in the country.
Reached on the phone in Georgia, Rep. Chris Smith says he was meeting with anyone he could -- Georgian and U.S. officials, as well as Russian government officials.
Smith says he plans to meet with the Russian ambassador to Georgia on Thursday.
Smith has been trying to get the Russians to open up a humanitarian corridor to get Ashley Evans, 7 and her sister Sophia, 3 out of western Georgia, as well as others stuck in the region.
Earlier this week, the girls' distraught father, Joseph tried to make his way to the worn-torn region in an attempt to rescue his children, but was stopped by British authorities. He understands that it's because the US government wanted him to be safe.
The Evans girls were visiting their maternal grandparents when Russian troops invaded Georgia nearly two weeks ago. Russian checkpoints have blocked their paths to escape.
