NJ Cracks Down On Tax Board Members' Travel

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) ― Reports of a county tax board's extravagant travel habits have prompted some new rules in New Jersey.

The state Treasury Department in recent months distributed guidelines to all 21 county tax boards. The guidelines say a state ethics officer needs to sign off on out-of-state trips, and even approve trips to in-state gatherings that aren't state-sanctioned.

New Jersey is also reinforcing ethics guidelines on tax board members accepting gifts or entertainment at so-called educational conferences.

The new rules come amid reports that Morris County Tax Board members over the years spent tens of thousands of dollars on travel to places as far-flung as Alaska, San Diego and Nashville.

The board has now curtailed members' travel.
