Long Island Boy Hit In Face By Stray Bullet

Suffolk County Police Launch Manhunt For Gunman

NORTH BELLPORT, N.Y. (CBS) ― An 11-year-old boy is in the hospital after he was shot in the face while sitting in his own kitchen on Monday.

On Monday night, the hunt for the gunman was heating up.

Fifth-grader Jeffrey Langhorn spent the day home from school, and was in the kitchen at 1:30 p.m. Monday when one of three bullets fired from the back yard struck the young boy in the face.

"He was shot from the outside, the bullet went through the wall and struck the child that was in the house," Suffolk County Police Det. Sgt. Daniel Molloy said.

Neighbors called 9-1-1 and police and paramedics arrived at the home on Provost Avenue to find not only the critically injured boy but the family's 15 pit bulls, which were removed one by one so police had room to investigate the crime scene.

The boy underwent surgery at Stony Brook University Hospital.

All Monday afternoon and evening his classmates were close to their parents and remained inside their homes, thinking about their injured friend.

"I hope you get better soon and come back to school," classmate Josiah Martin said.

At the boy's school, Frank P. Long Intermediate, Superintendant Susan Agruso said counselors will be here Tuesday to help kids, teachers and parents deal with the shock.

"They have to look to God, hope all heals," resident Tanya Graham said.

The big hope for residents is that Jeffrey pulls through this. The big question for investigators is who pulled the trigger?

If you have any information please call Suffolk County Crimestoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
