Thousands of people rallied in Manhattan on Saturday in one of a number of demonstrations around the country protesting California's new ban on gay marriage.
"I just want to be equal, like everybody else," Morris Park resident Hector Santiago said.
"My goal in having this particular protest was actually start, to be the spark for, the next great civil rights movement in the United States," Heath Tucker, from the advocacy group Join the Impact, said.
The cheering, chanting crowd stretched for blocks around City Hall.
It was young and boisterous, but peaceful.
Some people waved rainbow colored flags. Others wore pink buttons that said, "I do."
"I own a home in Massachusetts," Cliffside Park resident Edward Van Saders said. "So we've actually been considering, on our anniversary, having a wedding or marriage in Massachusetts."
"We need to, and will in the winter when the state legislature goes back into session, pass a resolution urging the passage of same-sex marriage in Albany," NYC Council Speaker Christine Quinn said.
Demonstrations were also planned in dozens of other U.S. cities.
