Fast-Moving Storms Flood Streets, Down Power Lines
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
It was wet and wild! Fast-moving storms moved through the Tri-State, flooding streets and homes.
It was a day where both flood and car insurance was needed, thanks to a storm that toppled a tree onto a car and the neighboring power lines.
Other damage came on flooded side streets, which left some drivers out of luck.
"I couldn't see," stranded driver Rita Stavile says. "There were a whole lot of cars ahead that you really couldn't see ahead of you."
The water hammered one Flushing neighborhood, leaving a three-foot-high water line that damaged cars and had residents salvaging what they could again.
"The city seems to know about it, and nothing gets done," Flushing resident Al Messine says. "This isn't the first time, this is the third time."
Then there was the Whitestone Expressway, which was completely shut down and cars diverted because of too much water at 20th Avenue.
(Sot clp 26 20:51:00 eileen edevohls, diverted driver) "I left Woodside two hours ago, visiting my mom, and I live in Bayside," diverted driver Eileen Edevohls says. "So it's a big surprise."
A big surprise was in store for residents throughout the evening, and it wasn't just the water. Across the Tri-State, downed power lines left entire blocks with no power.
