It has happened again! Early Wednesday morning another climber scaled the facade of the New York Times Building. It's the third time in less than five weeks that someone has dared to make the death defying climb.
Under the cover of night, another man with a message climbed the New York Times Building.
"Over the last couple of hours, all he's been doing is climbing and hanging," said an unidentified witness.
His name is David Malone. The ordeal began around 1:20 a.m. Wednesday morning. Police say he hung a banner advertising his book on al-Qaeda, then hung out for a couple of hours, soaking in the attention.
"If he wanted his media attention than he just got it. So point accomplished I guess," said witness Linda Hines.
The 29-year-old called the Daily News and told the paper he was a University of Michigan dropout who wanted to study al-Qaeda. The police, meanwhile, studied his every move. Four hours later, police cornered Malone and forced him to surrender. He was promptly taken to Bellevue Hospital for observation.
Things are back to normal at the New York Times Building, with several members of the NYPD and a private security force standing guard. But that clearly was not the case when Malone began his climb at 1:20 a.m.
The latest incident comes as a surprise, given the fact that the times said it increased building security after two men successfully climbed the building within hours of each other in June. The paper even said it erected wooden barriers on vertical and horizontal elements of the building. But a New York Times spokesman told CBS 2 that while those heightened security measures were in place on Wednesday, Malone was able to elude them.
And that in light of the latest climb, the spokesperson went on to say, "more permanent design modifications are in the works."
The big question: will they be enough to discourage the next daredevil from making the "Times Climb."
According to a New York Times report, one of those modifications might be the removal of nine feet of ceramic rods from the bottom of the building's facade. So far no charges have been filed against Malone.
