NYC Ambulance Convoy Heads To America's Gulf Coast

Bronx Emergency Response Companies Sending Trucks To Prepare For Possible Hurricane Gustav

NEW YORK (CBS) ― New York City ambulance companies are on the way to the Gulf Coast to help out, as many Louisiana residents are saying they can't believe they may be re-living Katrina all over again.

Three years ago today, Sylvia Scineaux Richard was evacuated from her beloved family home in New Orleans, which was totally destroyed by Katrina.

After years of rebuilding and renovating on the exact same spot, Richard can't believe that she's leaving her home again, fleeing to safer ground with family in Atlanta.

"I feel absolutely overwhelmed. The idea of having a situation that goes back to losing all my family things in six feet of water. To think that it could happen again is just totally unbelievable."

As Mrs. Richard and her neighbors are choosing to evacuate, here in our area paramedics and emergency medical technicians are stepping up to volunteer for a month-long tour in the Gulf Coast. Five ambulances and 15 crew members from Citiwide Mobile response got the call late last night to deploy, and now they are on their way.

"I feel excited to be part of this to help everyone who is going to be in need in Louisiana. I feel privileged," said Nicholas Dalrymple of Citiwide Mobile.

Three years ago, this group of paramedics and EMT's helped move people from homes, hospitals and nursing homes into temporary shelters. This time they are hoping that won't be necessary.
