New NYC Policy For Homeless Who Seek Shelter
Department Of Homeless Services To Turn Away Shelter Seekers
New York City has a new policy that may result in some homeless people being turned away from emergency shelters at night.
Currently, anyone who arrives at the city's intake center in the Bronx after 5 p.m. is given shelter for the night.
The Department of Homeless Services says that many people have already applied for longer term shelter, which involves a city investigation into their last living situation. Some are found to be ineligible for shelter because the city believes they have alternatives, such as relatives who'll give them shelter.
Starting Friday, if those already found not eligible for shelter show up after 5 p.m., they will no longer be admitted. Instead they'll be questioned about their situations, and if nothing has changed with the alternative options, they'll be turned away.
Mary Brosnahan, executive director of the Coalition for the Homeless, denounced the new policy.
