NYC's Main Post Office Site Of Fatal Stabbing
Police Say Suspect Went Into Rage After 20-Year-Old Victim Bumped Into Him, Stabbing Him Three Times In The Chest
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
A chance encounter Monday ended with a deadly stabbing. Now, a grieving family searches for answers, while police search for a suspect.
Police say he made the mistake of getting into an argument with the wrong stranger, and now his family is left mourning his death.
"He stabbed him three times in cold blood," mother Edith Gutierrez said.
Grieving mother Edith Gutierrez says she still can't understand why her son, Christopher Gutierrez, was stabbed dead in front of the main post office by a man he didn't know.
"I think it's all a mistake, I really do, and I hope it is," Edith said.
Police released a picture of the suspect carrying a camouflage backpack with the letters "US" on it. They say he went into a rage after the 20-year-old victim bumped into him just before 6 p.m. Sunday on Eighth Avenue and 33rd Street.
"He didn't have no problems with anybody," Edith said. "He was my son. He was working, he had his own place Uptown."
Police say the suspect didn't know Gutierrez that he stabbed him after an argument on the steps of the post office.
"I'm really hurt that he had to go and everything," brother Andrew Rodriguez said. "He has to learn how to keep his mouth shut like me, I avoided a lot of problems like that."
The picture of the suspect is believed to have been shot by a passerby. The stabbing has left folks who use the post office in shock.
"People bump into each other all the time this is New York," Manhattan resident Leela Samaroo said. "You just say you're sorry."
For the family, they now have to find the words to tell Gutierrez's little girl that her daddy is gone.
"I just lost my brother, my little kid brother," Francis Rivera said.
And it was all because of a chance encounter.
"He was a good person, telling me right from wrong and everything, not to do bad stuff," Andrew said.
The suspect is described as a black male, between the ages of 25 and 35. He is approximately 5-foot-10 and weights about 160 pounds. He was wearing a black T-shirt and jeans at the time of the incident.
If you have any information on this stabbing, you're urged to call police at 1-800-577-TIPS. All information will be kept confidential.
