Sources: NYPD Steroid Probe To Widen
Brooklyn Pharmacy Raided; High-Ranking Official Involved
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
A steroid scandal is rocking the New York City Police Department.
While NYPD officials maintain only six officers are suspected of buying the drug, on Wednesday night CBS 2 HD learned there may be more involved.
On the outside, the building in question looks like a simple neighborhood pharmacy
But inside sources say investigators uncovered an illegal steroids operation. An operation so big millions of dollars of the drug was allegedly being manufactured and sold from the pharmacy's back room.
And what may be more disturbing is who some of the customers may have been.
"Initially investigators identified six members of the NYPD who allegedly bought the illegal substance for personal use, but sources say that all changed on Monday when one of the employees arrested in the building agreed to cooperate with investigators.
CBS 2 HD has learned that employee handed over a list containing the names of several other members of the department, from officers to at least one high ranking official.
"If somebody is in a position of authority I think we have to go the extra mile to make sure they are drug free," Dr. Gary Wadler said.
Wadler is an expert in the field of steroid abuse. He said it's extremely dangerous for someone with a gun to be on steroids.
"In a moment of uncontrolled rage, a police officer with a gun in his hand might have pulled the trigger in a situation where he might not have done that," Wadler said.
Sources tell CBS 2 HD the NYPD does have a policy for testing its officers for drugs like steroids. The department conducts random drug testing, and also tests if there is a suspicion of drug use and if an officer gets promoted or transferred.
As for those found on the client list from the pharmacy? Sources stress although they don't know for sure they bought steroids, they will all be tested.
The department tells CBS 2 HD that while the officers involved may face disciplinary action. None are expected to be arrested.
