Driver Killed In Overturned Tanker Off Van Wyck

NEW YORK (CBS) ― The driver of an overturned tanker truck that ignited a major fire with a trail of smoke visible for miles on the North Conduit Avenue near the Van Wyck Expressway has been pronounced dead, sources tell CBS 2.

First responders said the driver, who has not been identified, was unable to escape the vehicle as it went up in flames after overturning. The accident occurred on a ramp leading onto northbound Van Wyck near South Ozone Park. Firefighters quickly worked to put the fire out after it broke out around 12:15 Monday afternoon.

The two-alarm blaze caused numerous streets to be shut down, including the northbound ramp of Van Wyck to North Conduit and the westbound ramp to North Conduit.

A sea of foam covered the ramp and surrounding ground area, even catching fire at one point as loose gasoline seeped into the foam. Officials tell CBS 2 that the tanker was carrying over 9,000 pounds of gasoline.

The stubborn blaze continued to burn the shell of the charred truck as firefighters doused it from multiple angles.
