Harlem Tower Developer Seeks MLB As Tenant
NEW YORK (AP) ―
A developer seeking to build an office tower in Harlem is trying to lure Major League Baseball and its new television network as a tenant, officials said Thursday.
Vornado Realty Trust plans to build the 21-story Harlem Park tower on Park Avenue and 125th Street, a few blocks from former President Clinton's office.
The developer is negotiating with MLB and city officials to lease about one-fifth of the building for its broadcast studios, officials said.
The developer and the league declined comment on the negotiations, details of which were reported in Thursday's New York Times.
The television network would be available in about 50 million homes next year; the network is planning to move to Secaucus, N.J., for temporary headquarters sometime next year.
The building would need an exemption to rise 40 feet higher than allowed under a controversial rezoning plan.
The city Planning Commission and City Council will consider a proposal in the spring to allow denser development in more than 20 blocks of Harlem's historic 125th Street corridor, which boasts such landmarks as the Apollo Theater and Sylvia's soul-food restaurant along with big national retailers.
Vornado would need an exemption to the rezoning proposal, which would limit building heights at 290 feet.
