Gov. Paterson Wages War On Violent Video Games

ALBANY (AP) ― A bill under consideration by New York Gov. David Paterson takes aim at marauding gunmen and violent vamps shredding cops and other victims in video games.

But critics say the state's retail lobby gutted the proposal. Gone from the final bill is a felony charge for selling video games that are sexually explicit or contain depraved violence. That would have made the law one of the strictest in the nation.

The bill Paterson could sign into law or veto by Wednesday includes creation of an advisory council on "interactive media and youth violence."

Its reports could lead to further legislation and regulation.

Violations of new labeling and parental control provisions could result in $100 civil penalties, far from the state prison sentences once proposed.
