Indian Point Operator To Report On Sleeping Guards

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) ― The operator of the Indian Point nuclear reactor north of New York City says it will respond to federal regulators seeking information about how it intends to keep security guards awake on the job.

Indian Point spokesman Jim Steets says the company would respond within the 60-day limit.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission last week directed all of the nation's nuclear plants to show it the actions they have taken to keep security guards from falling asleep on the job.

The directive comes after recent reports of guards falling asleep, including one at Indian Point. Indian Point is owned by Entergy Nuclear.

The NRC says the operators of nuclear power plants need to address physical conditions at security posts, such as lighting, temperature, noise and stimuli that can help keep officers awake.
