The mother of the New York City woman shot to death by the "Craigslist Killer" in a Boston hotel room is speaking out for the first time since the body of her daughter, Julissa Brisman, was found.
Carmen Guzman says she is glad that Philip Markoff, the suspect believed to be behind her daughter's murder and several other robberies of women who posted ads for adult services on Craigslist, has been captured.
In her statement she writes:
"Our family has been devastated by the loss of our beautiful daughter, Julissa. We are a close family, and Julissa called us every day. We won't be getting those calls anymore. She was studying to be a counselor and helped many people in our community. Over the past few days, people have told us the many ways in which Julissa helped them. Her friends say Julissa was like a bright light, full of energy and optimism, always ready to help other people. These words mean so much to us.
"The feeling of losing my daughter in this way and the pain she must have felt will haunt me for the rest of my life. She won't live to see her dreams. We will hold Julissa in our hearts every day.
"I feel very much relieved that the man who did this is in custody and will not be able to do this horrible thing to another family.
"We wish to give our sincere thanks to all the people who have expressed their sympathy and prayed for Julissa and for us."
Meanwhile, the jailed medical student's parents said nothing to reporters outside Boston's Nashua Street jail Friday as they visited their son for the first time. Markoff, who seemed so passive during his court appearance, is now physically restrained and under suicide watch, according to published reports.
This comes as police reportedly link Markoff to a third Craigslist crime: the attack on an exotic dancer at a hotel in Rhode Island late last week. Crime scene investigators apparently found his fingerprint in the hotel room where it occurred.
Through the attorney they hired, Markoff's parents say they stand by their son. "This is difficult for them, they would, we really request that they have some privacy," said attorney John Salsman. "They love their son very much, they're supportive of him and that's what they would say if they were speaking themselves."
Markoff is already charged with the murder of 25-year-old Brisman as well as an earlier attack on an alleged prostitute. Brisman was working as a masseuse, who Markoff allegedly booked through Craigslist.
Markoff's fiancée, Megan McAllister, has been in seclusion at her family's Little Silver, N.J., home. Her father, James McAllister, has said his daughter is standing by her man.
"As expected, [she's not] well. She's still confident in Phil," he said. "Other than that, we're saying a lot of prayers."
The confidence remains despite the latest discoveries by law enforcement authorities. Sources have confirmed that Brisman's was found in Markoff's apartment.
Investigators also found a handgun hidden in a copy of the medical school textbook "Gray's Anatomy," according to sources.
