Police say a medical student has already killed a woman he met over on craigslist; now they're worried he might kill himself.
With evidence mounting against him alleged craigslist killer Philip Markoff is now under suicide watch. Guards inside the Boston jail where Markoff has been remanded found marks consistent with shoelaces around his neck on Thursday and have since put him in a segregation unit.
Markoff's attorney, John Salsberg, would not comment about his client being on suicide watch.
"I remain very concerned about Philip. The transition from being free to being incarcerated is very difficult, and I have tremendous confidence that the Suffolk County Sheriff's Department is going to do a very capable job of making sure his safety and wellbeing are taken care of," he said.
Markoff's fiancée, Megan McAllister, has been in seclusion at her family's Little Silver, N.J., home. Her father, James McAllister, said his daughter is standing by her man.
"As expected, [she's not] well. She's still confident in Phil," he said. "Other than that, we're saying a lot of prayers."
The confidence remains despite the latest discoveries by law enforcement authorities. Sources have confirmed the underwear of murdered Manhattan masseuse Julissa Brisman was found in Markoff's apartment. Police said Markoff, a 23-year-old second-year med student at Boston University, shot and killed Brisman inside Boston's Marriott Copley Place on April 14. He's also accused of beating and robbing a prostitute in another Boston hotel.
When asked if his daughter knew anything about the crimes, James McAllister said, "Absolutely not."
The Boston Herald reported on Thursday that McAllister's mother had warned her about a murderer on the loose just as she was leaving to visit Markoff in Boston last weekend. Now, her father said she has not left their home.
"She's got a lot of friends, lot of family friends and that's been a big help to us. Everybody's been wonderful," James McAllister said.
Late Thursday afternoon the McAllister's parish priest arrived at their home to show his support and to help the family during this trying time.
Markoff is also accused of robbing a woman at the Westin Copley earlier this month, after he allegedly responded to the woman's erotic services ads on craigslist.
Markoff also is suspected in an attempted robbery at a Holiday Inn Express in Warwick, R.I., of a woman who had posted a craigslist ad as a stripper.
He was arrested Monday on his way to the Foxwoods casino in Connecticut. Investigators are looking into his apparent gambling debts as the possible motive for the robberies.
Sources have said Markoff was a "frequent visitor" to Foxwoods.
Investigators also found a handgun hidden in a copy of the medical school textbook "Gray's Anatomy," according to sources.
Police said Tuesday night the fresh-faced Markoff, who appeared in a Boston courtroom Tuesday morning, was living a lie and leading a predatory double-life.
"Philip Markoff is a man who is willing to take advantage of women -- to hurt them, to beat them, to rob them," Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley said.
