Deadly Plane Crash Kills 2 In Ocean County

OCEAN COUNTY, N.J. (CBS) ― A small plane with four people onboard crashed in a heavily wooded areas near a small airport in southern Ocean County late Saturday afternoon, killing two people and seriously injuring two others.

It was not immediately clear what caused the crash, which occurred shortly before 4 p.m., said Jim Peters, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

The two people killed were pronounced dead at the scene, said Sgt. Stephen Jones, a state police spokesman. The other two onboard sustained serious injuries and were flown by helicopter to a nearby hospital, but further details were not immediately available.

After receiving reports about the crash, state troopers began an extensive search of the area and, with the aid of a medical helicopter, found the plane in the woods not far from the runway at Eagles Nest Airport in Eagleswood Township.

Peters said someone onboard the Cessna 337 Skymaster used a cell phone to contact someone in Texas who is connected to the operation of the aircraft, which had taken off from Millville. That person then called the FAA's flight service station in Leesburg, Va. to report the crash.

Further details on the plane's owners were not immediately available.
