NY Authorities Charge 22 In Mob Case

NEW YORK (CBS) ― A series of early-morning raids has led to the arrests of 22 people, including some suspected members of organized crime, on loan sharking and gambling charges.

Police and prosecutors said the arrests were the result of five separate indictments on Staten Island.

Attorney General Andrew Cuomo said in a statement that the charges range from loan sharking to bookmaking directly controlled by the mob.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said the probe started with an unsuccessful attempt by members of the Luchese (loo-KAY'-zee) crime family to bribe New York City police officers with $250,000.

Kelly said arrests on the bribery charges were executed last month.

Cuomo was elected Attorney General on November 6, 2007.
