NY Prosecutors Charge Pregnant Woman In Crash
Jennifer Jorgensen Pleaded Not Guilty To Manslaughter, Other Charges In May 2008 Crash That Killed Elderly Couple
RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) ―
Prosecutors on Long Island say a pregnant woman was on drugs and alcohol when she crashed head-on into a car last year.
The May 2008 collision killed an elderly couple. Her baby died 5 days later.
Jennifer Jorgensen pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges including manslaughter, vehicular homicide, and driving under the combined influence of alcohol and drugs.
The other driver, 74-year-old Robert Kelly, died at the scene. His 70-year-old wife died three weeks later.
Prosecutors said Jorgenson had a blood-alcohol reading of 0.06, under the state limit of 0.08 for DWI. They said she also was under the influence of an anxiety drug called clonazepam.
Jorgensen's attorney said blood tests taken at a hospital after the crash were negative. She was released without bail.
