It's a tragedy that's stunned the country: a pregnant New York City traffic agent was struck and killed in the Bronx.
Her baby was saved, but is now clinging to its life, and the child's heartbroken father is speaking out.
Rafael Sanz still has his son, but his wife is gone.
"My baby is alright," Sanz said. "My wife is gone, and I love her very much."
Police say Sanz's pregnant wife, Donnette, was killed when 72-year-old Walter Walker, driving with a suspended license, slammed his van into the traffic agent.
Doctors were able to save the baby by performing an emergency C-section at St. Barnabus Hospital.
Asked for his thoughts on Walker, Rafael Sanz was unforgiving.
"I hope he rots in hell," Sanz said.
John Dargon was in the passenger seat of Walker's van when the accident happened.
The van hit Sanz, knocking her into the path of a yellow school bus. Donnette was pinned underneath the bus.
A crowd of people rushed toward the crash to lift the bus off of Sanz.
"We got out and helped lift the bus off, and [Walker] was crying," Dargon said. "He said, 'Lord, I'm going to jail.'"
Police have charged Walker with criminally negligent homicide and driving with a suspended license. They say Walker's license has been suspended 21 times.
"He was crying like a baby," Dargon said. "He said, 'Lord, I killed that woman.'"
The baby, just 3 pounds 6 ounces, remains in critical condition at St. Barnabus.
He was reportedly given the name Sean Michael.
The baby's father is now left to care for the child. It was the couple's first baby.
